LOCATION : Peru is located in the central and western region of South America.
SURFACE : The country has an area of 1’285,215 km2. Its three main regions are the coast (12% of the territory), a long desert strip with beaches and cliffs crossed by 50 rivers flowing into the Pacific Ocean; the Andes (28% of the territory), with average altitudes reaching between 3,000 and 4,000 meters above sea level and high mountains as the snow-capped Huascarán (6,768 meters above sea level) which is the country’s highest mountain; and the Amazon rainforest (60% of the territory), where luscious vegetation is crossed by mighty rivers flowing into the Amazonas, the largest, widest and biggest river in the world.
POPULATION : 28 million inhabitants.
GEOPOLITICAL DIVISION : Peru is divided in 24 departments, and its democratic government is in charge of President Alan García Pérez.
WEATHER : Peru has a wide variety of climates due to the Andean mountain range, the anti cyclonic circulation of the Southern Pacific, the lukewarm El Niño Current and the cold Humboldt Current. It almost never rains in Lima, the capital and venue of the congress; the city has typically a dense mist and a very light rain, which give altogether the sensation of a colder weather although the average temperature barely reaches between 13°C and 19°C. It is very humid.
In cities such as Arequipa, Puno, Cuzco, Ica, Paracas, Nazca, Trujillo, Chiclayo or Puerto Maldonado however the weather is completely different so it is highly recommendable to ask for information on the desired destination.
